Welcome to Mama, Ama & Lots of Drama — Big Love, Small Budget

From Mama

Hi, I'm Ashley — Mama to three amazing kids — and I am so glad you're here.

If you'd asked me a few years ago what I wanted my kids' birthday parties to feel like, I wouldn't have said "Pinterest-perfect" or "the talk of the preschool." I would have said one word: magic. The kind of magic that has nothing to do with money and everything to do with someone loving you enough to turn your living room into a jungle, or your backyard into a carnival, with nothing but streamers, cardboard, and a whole lot of heart.

I know that kind of magic is possible on a budget, because I grew up inside it.

From Ama

And I'm Ashley's mom — "Ama" to the grandbabies now, but back then I was just a mom figuring it out one paycheck at a time.

I want to tell you something I've never really said out loud: those birthday parties everyone remembers? The ones with the homemade piñatas and the backyard treasure hunts and the cake that definitely leaned to one side? We did not have money for those parties. We had a budget, a box of craft supplies, and a fierce belief that our kids deserved to feel celebrated, no matter what was or wasn't in the bank account.

I learned that a party isn't the sum of what you spend. It's the sum of what you notice — what your kid loves, what makes them laugh, what makes them feel seen — and then you build the party around that one true thing. Everything else is just glue and glitter.

Full Circle

Here's the part that still gets us both a little teary: when Ashley had kids of her own, she didn't ask for a bigger budget. She asked for the recipe.

"How did you make my 6th birthday feel like a real carnival with, like, sixty dollars?"

"How did I not know we were on a budget?"

So that's what this space is. It's Mama and Ama, one generation apart, turning that recipe into something we can share with you — because we believe every family deserves parties and celebrations that feel abundant, even when the budget doesn't.

What You'll Find Here

This isn't just a birthday party blog. It's a place for:

  • Party success stories — real celebrations we've thrown (the wins and the "well, that didn't go as planned")
  • Budget-first event planning — birthdays, but also holidays, baby showers, backyard get-togethers, and the small celebrations that don't need a "reason"
  • The everyday of parenting — the joys, the exhaustion, the funny stuff, and the stuff nobody warns you about, from a mom in the thick of it and a grandma who's been there
  • Things we actually love — products, tools, and ideas we use ourselves, not just things that look good in a photo

Why We're Doing This

Because somewhere out there is a mom staring at a Pinterest board at midnight, feeling like she can't compete. And we want to hand her the same thing Ama handed Mama: permission to skip the competition entirely, and a plan that actually works.

We're so glad you're starting this with us. Grab a coffee, pull up a chair — Mama and Ama have a lot to share.
