Three Kids, Three Heads of Hair: Surviving the Morning Hair Battle

Three Kids, Three Heads of Hair

If you'd told me before I had kids that hair would be one of the most emotionally charged parts of my morning, I would have laughed. And yet here we are. I have three wonderful children, and every single one of them has hair with a mind of its own.

My oldest is 8, and she has long, thick, curly hair that tangles if you so much as look at it wrong. She's also at the age where she wants to start experimenting with hairstyles and do her own hair — which I love, even when it means renegotiating the bathroom mirror every morning. My son is 7, has short hair, and somehow has more cowlicks than I thought were biologically possible. He wakes up every single day looking like he's been through a wind tunnel. And then there's my youngest — 3 going on 13 — who has long, fine hair and a scalp so sensitive that even a gentle brush can bring on the dramatics.

For a long time, mornings in our house sounded like a chorus of yelps and "ow, it hurts!" no matter how careful I tried to be. It didn't matter how slowly I worked or how much I promised it would be over soon — hair time was tear time.

That's changed a lot lately, thanks to a handful of products that have made our mornings quieter and, most days, tear-free. Here's what's working for each of my three very different heads of hair.

My Oldest: Long, Thick, and Curly

For my daughter, everything starts with a good spray of So Cozy's Kids Detangler before I even think about touching a brush. From there, I work through her curls with a Wet Brush, which glides through in a way that a regular brush never could.

Since she's sporty, a classic ponytail or a braid is our go-to for function over fuss. To keep flyaways in check, I use the Kitsch hair taming wand along her hairline for a smooth, slicked-back finish in front — it makes a world of difference in how "put together" the whole look feels, even on a rushed morning. And when we want something a little fancier, we'll do heatless curlers overnight, or reach for the TYMO CurlPro for curls with a bit more polish.

My Son: Short Hair, Serious Bed Head

My son's routine is simpler, but no less essential. A continuous spray bottle to wet down the chaos, a comb to bring some order to it, and then either gel or the Kitsch hair taming wand to wrangle the cowlicks into submission. It's quick, it's low-drama, and most days it actually works — which, with cowlicks like his, feels like a small miracle.

My Youngest: Fine Hair, Big Feelings

My youngest is the one who needs the most patience. Fine hair tangles in its own frustrating way, and her scalp sensitivity means every brush stroke has to be gentle and intentional. We always start with the So Cozy's Kids Detangler to soften things up before I even attempt a brush. Then I use the Kitsch hair taming wand to slick back the front of her hair before moving into braids, pigtails, or a pony — whatever she's decided she's feeling that day (opinions are strong at 3-going-on-13).

Still Testing, Always Learning

I'll be honest — I'm still trying new products all the time to see what works best for each of my kids. What works for my daughter's curls doesn't always translate to my youngest's fine, sensitive strands, and my son mostly just wants to be left alone about the whole thing. But finding the right combination has genuinely made our mornings calmer, faster, and a lot less tearful.
